PATHWAY-27 includes 25 partners broadly distributed in Europe: west to east, south to north Europe, including one Candidate Country (Turkey). The EU Consortium consists of different organisation types, namely: Universities, Research Institutes and SMEs.
The University if Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna (UNIBO), was founded in 1088, and is the oldest university in Western Europe. Nowadays, it still remains one of the most important institutions of higher education across Europe. The University places special emphasis on the excellence in education and research. UNIBO has gained a considerable experience in FP7 KBBE projects, being involved in 35 successful proposals and coordinating 8 of these.
Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences – DISTAL: research areas related to human nutrition, food chemistry, microbiology, food production, technology, quality and safety. It is involved in national/international projects aimed at the improvement, differentiation, preservation of animal and vegetal raw materials and their derivatives. It is active in ETP "Food for life" and on the issues concerning the food chain
Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences - DIMECThe, S.Orsola-Malpighi General Hospital, includes several disciplines, in particular, internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, endocrinology and metabolism. It is deeply involved in several national and international projects and has a worldwide reputation for its research and training activities. The Department participates in numerous clinical trials covering both disease prevention and treatment, and has highly experienced personnel.

INRA is a public French research organisation and has among its strategic interests the impact of food on human health and well-being. It is ranked 2nd in the world and 1st in Europe for publications in agricultural sciences, and plant and animal sciences.
Two different Joint Research Units (UNH and STLO) will be involved in PATHWAY-27. The Unit of Human Nutrition (UNH) has as goal the elucidation of key mechanisms involved in the prevention of ageing-associated diseases by nutrients and foods- Increasing our understanding of the needs is crucial for establishing nutritional recommendations and preventing metabolic alterations. To address this issue, UNH is developing an innovative approach integrating the human complexity at the physiological, metabolic and nutritional levels. The UNH scientific excellence is based on strong competencies in human nutrition, physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, cell and molecular biology. The unit will be contributing to WP5 and leading the Task 5.2. "Selection and characterization of volunteers and Ethic Committee approval". In clinical studies, the Unit has a strong integration within the Centre of Research in Human Nutrition (CRNH) for the management of the nutritional interventions The Research Unit on Science & Technology of Milk and Egg (STLO) in Rennes is the largest research unit at INRA involved on milk and egg science and technology and publishes around 60 peer-reviewed article on these topics every year. It is world-wide known for its membrane separation projects linked to milk molecules fractionation. STLO is a pillar of CEREL (http://www.cerel.org), the European Centre for Dairy Research and Training. STLO is also in the core of VALORIAL, a network associating more than 200 agri-food companies and research institutes and aiming at promoting research and innovation in food products. A 800 m² Dairy Platform is part of the STLO and provides a unique experimental facility dedicated to conducting research on milk and dairy products. The Dairy Platform is certified to ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management System. It provides a complete range of dairy technologies and allows the design of dairy products in perfectly-controlled conditions. STLO has also developed an in vitro dynamic digestion model. In PATHWAY-27, STLO will be the leader of WP2 and in charge of Task 6.1 in WP6.

Karolinska Institutet (KI) was founded by King Karl XIII in 1810. Today, KI is one of the world´s leading medical universities and accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden.
Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine. KI has a close relationship to the clinical milieu, a well established infrastructure and a competitive track record of successful international collaborations.
Previous experience related to the task: WP3 KI has developed an array of methods to mechanistically study human adipocyte function in vitro and perform advanced metabolic studies in vivo in our well-equipped clinical research unit. Large tissue banks including plasma/sera, DNA, adipose tissue (visceral/subcutaneous) and liver from lean and obese adult cohorts. Detailed clinical phenotypes available from all subjects. Specific areas of expertise related to the proposed tasks: in vitro and in vivo studies of human adipocytes, bioinformatics, systems biology, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolism, genetics, clinical trials.

The Max Rubner-Institut (MRI) is a government-funded German research institution. Its primary task is to advise the Federal Ministry on matters of human nutrition and consumer policy, and to carry out the research needed as the basis of such advice. Research is conducted in the fields of nutrition, food science, nutrition behaviour and related fields. Special emphasis is placed on the elucidation of the role of food constituents including phytochemicals and their role in disease prevention. The Department of Physiology and Biochemistry of Nutrition of the MRI has extended experience to measure immunological, antioxidative, and anticarcinogenic activities of food constituents or diets at the cellular level, in animal models as well as in human intervention studies.
Previous experience related to the tasks The department runs a human nutrition ward fully equipped for controlled dietary intervention studies, short-term/bioavailability, long-tern/bioactivity. The MRI has facilities for volunteer characterization (dietary habits, physical activity, energy expenditure, body composition/DXA, cardiovascular/lung function, etc.) and detailed body fluid analysis (e.g. LC-MS/MS, GC-MS) of diet and function related markers.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is a non-profit government organisation. From its wide knowledge base, VTT can combine different technologies, create new innovations and a wide range of world-class technologies and applied research services, thus improving its clients' competitiveness and competence. VTT Group is the largest public applied research activity in Northern Europe with a staff of 2800 and turnover M€280. VTT has 70 years of experience in addressing the needs of industry and the knowledge-based society. VTT's key technology fields include: Applied materials, Bio- and chemical processes, Energy, ICT, Industrial systems, Microtechnologies and electronics, Services and the built environment, and Business Research. VTT has participated in more than 1000 European R&D Framework Programme projects, within various thematic programmes.
The food research at VTT aims at developing technology and expertise for innovative use of raw materials in foods for well-being. The specific targets are to 1) develop innovative bioprocessing technologies (use of enzymes and starter cultures), 2) engineer of food structure 3) modify physiological functionality, 4) improve and commercialize of food technologies.
Previous experience related to the tasks. VTT has over 15 years experience in research and development of health-promoting wholegrain and bran-enriched wheat, oat and rye products. Recently, the main focus has been on controlled modification of dietary fibre components (as beta-glucan) and proteins for improved technological and nutritional properties of cereal products... In addition, VTT has been active in development of ß-glucan enriched oat bran fractions, developing a patented dry method. By this method we have been able to concentrate ß-glucan in oat bran with as high as 34 % concentration. The higher concentration of ß-glucan facilitates its applicability in food products in physiologically relevant amounts.
